Annual Report 2009-10

The Whole Person Health Trust

This has been another quiet year for the trust apart from the development of the Whole Person Health Care course being planned at Gloucestershire University in 2011. Whilst there is no clinical expression of the Trust’s whole-person approach now functioning, the lessons learned are being put into practice in a variety of ways as described below.

Web Sites
Our new web site is www.wphtrust.com . We are continuing to gradually develop it’s usefulness as a resource for people interested in whole-person health care. At the same time we are responsible for the WholeCare website at www.wholecare.org.

Training programmes
Dr Sheldon and the other members of the WholeCare group continue to be involved in a number of teaching and training sessions both in the UK and abroad. These have mainly been to medical audiences, informing them of the importance of a whole-person approach, and then discussing possible ways in which medical practice may be altered to provide a more whole-person method of health care delivery. During this year we began developing the concept of a Master’s Degree programme in Whole Person Health and have made contacts and initial plans with the Faculty of Health at Gloucestershire University. The first course is planned to start early in 2011.

Some on-going consultancy work has been undertaken, so far mainly with GPs, to help them seek for ways in which whole-person principles may be applied in practice.

Spiritual Care Advisors (Community Health Care Chaplains)
In conjunction with a number of General Practices in Birmingham, Dr Sheldon has been cooperating with the local Mental Health team to audit and develop the use of SCAs (Spiritual Care Advisors) into Primary Care. Up to now these advisors have been called Chaplains, but we are now developing a job description and training programme to fully integrate these advisors into the NHS team. The preferred name is probably Community Health Care Chaplains.

WholeCare
This new organization has been developed by Dr Sheldon and others interested in the field of wholeness and healing. The main co-workers are Dr Michael Harper, Dr Geoffrey Clarke, Dr Alison Gray and Revd Dr Russ Parker. The organization intends working as an umbrella organisation for healing centers and Christian whole-person projects. As part of this cooperation WholeCare was involved with Burrswood Hospital and the Acorn Christian Healing Foundation in running the second annual conference on Whole Person Care at Burrswood Hospital. This one was called “Are we there yet” and was chaired by Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali.

We have received further gifts during this last year, mainly dedicated to the work of WholeCare.. The Whole Person Health Trust has held these designated funds to be spent by WholeCare on projects relating to the advancement of whole person care. Conferences have been held, and research fellows already appointed to explore in depth some aspects of the whole person approach in health care. Further details available from their web site at www.wholecare.org.

We have now decided to seek a partnership with the new programs at Gloucestershire University which is developing an extensive program of lectures, workshops and training modules.

EMCPA

The annual meeting of the European Movement for Christian Psychology and Anthropology (EMCPA) was held this year in Warsaw, Poland, and Dr Sheldon was one of the main contributors. We also designed and maintain a web site on behalf of the organisation which can be found at www.emcpa.eu. We are now passing on the responsibility for this web site.

Future developments
It is our intention to spend the coming year concentrating of developing and disseminating resources for health care professionals, through books and pamphlets, our web sites and conferences and training seminars. We also intend encouraging other professionals who are seeking to develop a whole person approach to health.
