The Whole Person Health Trust

This has been a further year of development for the trust as we facilitated the development of the Professional Association for Community Health Chaplaincy and also the module on Whole Person Health Care which was held at Gloucestershire University in 2011. Whilst there is no current clinical expression of the Trust’s whole-person approach functioning, the lessons learned are being put into practice in a variety of ways as described below.

Web Sites

Our web site is www.wphtrust.com . We are continuing to gradually develop it’s usefulness as a resource for people interested in whole-person health care. At the same time we are responsible for the WholeCare website at www.wholecare.org. We acknowledge that both of these web sites have not been adequately maintained during the last year and we need to seek for more funds and support to enable us to provide useful and up-to-date resources about whole-person healthcare.

Gloucestershire University Master’s Module

Dr Sheldon, Revd Dr Gray, Revd Dr Parker, Dr Bryson and Dr Harper along with the other members of the WholeCare group have been involved in a number of teaching and training sessions both in the UK and abroad. These have mainly been to medical audiences, informing them of the importance of a whole-person approach, and then discussing possible ways in which medical practice may be altered to provide a more whole-person method of health care delivery. During the last year we developed and ran a Master’s Degree Module in Whole Person Health and have made contacts and initial plans with the Centre for the study of Faith, Science and Values in Healthcare at Gloucestershire University.

Professional Association of Community Healthcare Chaplaincy (PACHC)

Much effort has been expended over this last year to found the Professional Association for Healthcare Chaplaincy. This has been led by Dr Ross Bryson and Dr Lionel Mills in Birmingham with Jonathan Martin of Marketplace Chaplains in Europe. Their new web site may be found at www.pachc.info  The WholeCare team have agreed to partner and support this development which aims to increase the provision of accredited and trained chaplains based on General Practice surgeries to serve the spiritual healthcare needs of patients.

WholeCare

WholeCare continues to grow in its three tasks of education, clinical practice and support in the area of whole person health care within the Christian tradition. It has been developed during this year by Dr Sheldon, Dr Michael Harper, Dr Geoffrey Clarke, Revd. Dr Alison Gray and chaired by Revd Dr Russ Parker. The organisation intends working as an umbrella organisation for healing centers and Christian whole-person projects. As part of this cooperation WholeCare was again involved with Burrswood Hospital and the Acorn Christian Healing Foundation in running the third annual conference on Whole Person Care at Burrswood Hospital.

EMCPA is now EMCAPP

We have spent time this year passing on the responsibility for this web site and organisation of the group founded by Dr Sheldon around 25 years ago.  This world wide organisation met again this year and is slowly evolving into an international fellowship of Christian psychologists, counsellors and theologians. The organisation has changed its name to EMCAPP to include Psychologists in its membership. We have completed the handover of the web site which can now be found at www.emcapp.eu

Future developments

It is our intention to spend the coming year concentrating on developing and disseminating resources for health care professionals, through books and pamphlets, our web sites and conferences and training courses. We also intend encouraging other professionals who are seeking to develop a whole person approach to health.

Some on-going consultancy work has also been undertaken, so far mainly with GPs, to help them seek for ways in which whole-person principles may be applied in practice. We are also developing consultancy in mentoring and listening skills.

Like many organisations we have found it difficult to raise funds in this last year and so rely on volunteer help. Anyone who wishes to join us in completing our aims is most welcome. Please contact Mike Sheldon on drmikesheldon@aol.com
